Protection for toy train electronics when using
*Non-linear waveform transformers:
Not all chips earlier than QS2p/QS3000 will work correctly with the following transformers:
* Lionel Cab-1TM operating Power MasterTM set to Conventional
* New Lionel transformers powered with "Bricks"
* Lionel BW-80, CW-80
* MTH Z-1000
TM
* Z-500
* Z-750 (Do not use the ones that came in the Yellow box until you have had the factory update them.)
The acid test is performed with a QSI Power Programmer. If the spike indicator light remains on at high voltages, do not use the transformer until it has been
successfully repaired. A properly repaired transformer will not keep the light on at high Voltage.
* All TrolTM
* MRC Tech IITM
* Dallee Holster
TM

The above transformer are very powerful, requiring a QSI PowerGuard to be attached to each transformer tap powering trains with electronics in them.
For better
QS-3000 operation adjust Reset #19 to Choice #6.

STR Warranty Requirements:
To make the one year warranty valid for new or re-initialized sound systems, the user must:
1) have the power supply Updated.
2) have a QSI PowerGuard or Power Programmer connected to the track where the loco is operated/tested.
3) the battery must test good. See the 4 steps in Battery Info: Battery Checks and Tests.
Notes:
Neither the MTH Z-750 in the yellow box nor the MRC O27 is acceptable, unless it passes this test:
With no load on the track, turn the throttle all the way up. If the center light on the Power Guard lights up and stays on, the transformer is defective and must either be repaired or replaced with something else.

PowerGuard: One required for each transformer output that will operate trains with electronics in them:
See:
Sound Syst & Opts Prices: Other QSI Products Section 1 for price.
Power Programmer: Provides automatic location of desired Reset state and has clean Horn & Whistle functions. Power Guard is built in. Same transformer requirement as the PowerGuard:
See:
Sound Syst & Opts Prices: Other QSI Products Section 6 for use in the QSI Power Programmer

Users should plan for random memory scrambling when operating any QSI Equipped loco without using a Power Guard or Power Programmer or even a dead battery.

Note: Consider your PowerGuard(s) as a 1 time payment Life Insurance policy for all your locos' electronics.
To be completely covered, install a PowerGuard or Power Programmer on each transformer output tap that will
be powering locos with electronics in them.

More NOTES:
Installation instructions for the entire series of QSI After Market Sound Systems are generically the same.
This includes QS1.0, QS1.1, QS2, QS2p, Proto One, Proto Plus, Proto Deluxe, Proto Deluxe II, and OEM.
The installing of either QS2p or QS-3000 also are the same.

When installing a QS-3000, do not connect any volume control to it. Instead, use Reset position #7 for adjusting the volume.

When installing sound systems in metal tenders, make sure that the top board's pins do NOT contact the metal of the ceiling or sides.

Warranty is not extended to accidental or deliberate destruction of the electronics for failure to follow the installation instructions.
Some simple precautions protect against almost all possible errors.

1) Do not allow the boards to contact any type of metal, solid or pieces. This prevents the possibility of one or more of the solder spots to be accidentally connected together. All those spots are separated for a reason.

2) Do not plug the boards together in any arrangement other than shown in the drawings. If the top board is plugged in backwards, made obvious by the board sticking out farther on one end that the other 2, will, when powered, guarantee a destroyed top board. All the active parts will be blown out and the electrolytic caps will be reverse stressed, rendering them unreliable for any future use. The board is worthless as such a wholesale replacement of parts will lower the reliability of the board below reasonable usability. The customer faces the loss for such disregard. Board replacement is standard board price, as there are no components worth salvaging.

3) Carefully locate the speaker connection, LS1, before plugging in the speaker. Using any other 2 pin plug will result in blowing out the microprocessor. Microprocessor replacement:
$50 for a D78237 and some D78233s (QS2p and all earlier)
$75 for a D78402 (QS3000).

4) Do NOT allow the battery clip leads to flop around. Any accidental touching of either clip to board metal spots could take out the top board, or middle board or both.
