QSI's Sound Board History The earlier boards, QS-1s, QS-2s and QS-2Ps as well as all the ProtoSounds1 retail and original factory installed sound systems, start up with 2 bells. They also do not have the pull plug for doing a Full System Restore, which the QS-3000 has, usage of which is mentioned on page 105 in the QS-3000 user guide.
Pulling the plug on a QS-3000 board instructs the micro processor to not only clears all the Reset settings back to "factory default" (what Reset 18 does in 3 easy steps) but also includes a complete restoring of the EPROMs memory.
Also, the QS-3000 boards (this is only the top board) have the numbers "3000" in big while ink, and the boards are blue. There is no distinctive printed identification beyond an innocuous "QS1C5 O 1994 QSI" in white on the earlier boards, which are green.
What is written on the plug-in chip?
If it is a QS-2 or QS2+ the first part will be QS2 or QS2+, printed in blue.
The next letter will indicate if it is an After Market chip "S" or an MTH conversion chip "C".
The last letter in the top line indicates what the software revision is. "A" is the earliest, "E" is the latest.
If it is a 3000, the first part will be QS3, printed or written in red.
The last letter in the top line indicates what the software revision is. "A" is the earliest, "E" is the latest.On the 2nd line, The After Market sound sets have a 3 digit number.
The MTH chips have a 5 digit alpha numeric identifier code.
"F" identifies a chip as having Freight Yard Sounds. Either a P or no letter after the number indicates that it has passenger announcements.
If it is an original MTH chip, it usually states what series and loco it is for, printed in black. These chips are similar to QS-1s with various parts of the QS-2 software added.
The OEM line is identified by the letters OEM followed by the loco name or type. This scheme was was used by Sunset Models and Weaver.
For the QS-1s, it is a strange almost undecipherable code to indicate what type of loco it is intended for. The best way to identify what it is to listen to it.
