All After Market and ProtoSounds1 Sound System failures are repairable.Many are also upgradeable. The most common failure is memory scramble, which can be corrected even when the MTH restore chip is not effective.
Some symptoms: Only 1 or 2 bells at power on. The 3 "clanks of death" Erratic to unpredictable operation or its lack. Only 1 direction operation is sometimes a bottom board failure, which is in most cases is easily corrected.
Most repairs require only memory re-initialization, 1 or 2 power supply updates, and often, a new battery. Send all three After Market boards or both ProtoSounds1 boards and the battery you are using or propose to use for a through checkout $45 plus shipping charges. Any excess is refunded.

QSI & MTH After Market Repairs
1) Send the offending locos to STR.
STR will determine what is wrong with each of them in turn, Correcting memory scrambling, $15 Replacing defective batteries with new MTH N-M-H batteries, $12 Stabilizing power supply, $15 Removing extraneous jumper connections and adding lead stiffeners: $5 Adapter for the battery charging circuit to handle N-M-H batteries. $15 Repackaging handling charge. $3. This is a total of $65 per loco if only the top two electronics boards are sent. Steamer tenders chassis add $5. Diesel chassis add $10. For either type, with shells, on add an additional $5.
Shipping It is best to use the original foam box. No need for the holding cardboard box. The foam boxes can be taped closed.
When shipping without shells make sure that the packaging will not allow any weight or hard spots to press on the motor shafts. They are soft iron, non-magnetic, and bend easily. While most can be re-bent, it is not easy to get back the original alignment. $5.
Not shipping in the original mfgs. box? In addition to the above, make sure that there is at lease 2" of firm packing on each end to protect the couplers from hitting the ends of the box. There are tremendous shipping forces which will cause the contents to shift around. While there must be some give, there also needs to be firm resistance to movement. To-damaged-to-repair motor replacements run $50 ea plus $15 installation. Replacement coil couplers: $10.

Adding the QS2p to the loco at the time of repair: $20.
