Power Supplies are brought up to date as part of the repair process.
After Market power supplies are beefed up to function correctly in non-linear transformer environments. Warning: Do not use an After Market unit that has not been updated to properly function in a non-linear environment as it will burn out.
The updates: 1) Update 1 enables the After Market Power Supply to operate in a non-linear environment: $15-$30, depending upon vintage.
2) Unneeded connections between the analog logic on the reverse unit board and the micro Processor on the top board are disconnected by modifying the Power Supply. This prevents the possibility of a logic failure on the bottom board from destroying the micro Processor. The analog logic is not used when the sound system is plugged in. $3. If combs are needed, add $2.
The elimination of a lot of components, including the analog logic, on the reverse unit is why the cost is lower for the OEM reverse unit versions:
3) The Battery Current Limiter product has NOT been obsoleted by the new Green MTH battery. The MTH battery, P/N BG 5000005, thought to have had a 20 mA current limiting device built in has proven false. Hence the series current limiter circuit has to be continued. The STR battery current limiter has become available to prevent battery charging current from becoming excessive enough to burn out the After Market Power Supply when using any 9V (8.4V) rechargeable batteries. Specify which kind of battery you want to use: 3a) For use with the Chicago Electric, GP and many other 8.4 Volt Ni-Cad batteries: Kit: $5, Installed: $10 3b) For use with most 8.4 Volt Ni-Metal-Hydride Batteries: Kit: $7.50, Installed $15
9V Carbon-Zinc and Alkaline batteries are not recommended, as these types were never designed to be charged.
See: Battery Info: Battery Charging with all QSI Designed After Market & MTH AC Sound Systems
Note: White MTH Ni-Cad batteries are all way beyond end of life. Use of the shorted ones could destroy the battery protection ckt and possibly the Power Supply. By the end of 2012, the last of the Grey MTH batteries will become suspect. Please subject any that you have to the 4 battery tests, and discard when they become marginal.
Either 3a or 3b can be ordered as an assembled unit ready to install in your loco. Payment by check, shipped by uninsured 1st Class, add $1 to any number from 1 to 10 of the above. Payment by Pay Pal shipped by USPS Priority Mail, insured: Add $9.55 shipping, insurance and handling.
4) WARNING: Use of either the J&W Electronics BCR or The Dallee BRC with any After Market Power Supply, is at your own risk, including but not limited to loss of Warranty. Replacement After Market Power Supplies: $75 ea. less $20 for return of destroyed one, for salvage.
5) ProtoSounds1 power supplies are stabilized so as to prevent memory scramble next time the battery fails. $15.
An option: Have the battery charging resistor beefed up for use with either Ni-Metal Hydride or the BCR. $5.
Repairs of non-functional power supplies varies from $20 up to the current replacement cost.
