QSI Sound Sysem Repairs: QSI & MTH Sound Systems, Full Service Repair

Put your cursor over the "QSI Sound System Repairs" and click for
other repair info.

Most QSI & MTH After Market and MTH ProtoSounds1 Sound System
failures are repairable.

Full Service available for your loco:
Stumped with your loco's erratic behavior and don't want to pull the top 2 boards, or remove the sound system?

If at all possible, take your loco to one of the listed "STR Supported Hobby Shops", listed by state, in yours or a neighboring state.

If there is no dealer nearby, send diesel loco or steam tender to STR for a complete checkout of the electronics. All board repairs and wiring corrections are included (except cables with plugs). New batteries are available.

Send Diesel loco as is, using original foam inner box.
Send Steamer Tender only, unless you have doubts about the loco also.

Better: Remove the shell and keep it and the original box at home. Wrap the chassis (with the electronics) in paper, followed by bubble wrap of at least one inch thick padding all around. Place in a heavy cardboard box having at least 1" of space all around the wrapped bundle, and fill the empty spaces with plastic foam "peanuts" or other cushioning filler. Note: Foam rubber is easily too stiff. Make sure that any vulnerable motor flywheels cannot be bumped against anything hard, such as rigid foam or another piece.

Most repairs require only memory re-initialization: $15 & 1 or 2 Power Suppy Updates: $30, upgrading the battery charging resistor from 0.25 Watts to 1 Watt; $5, and often, a new N-M-H MTH  battery: $12.
An upgrade for the After Market PS-1 is the N-M-H adapter: $15

Disassembly/Reassembly fees:
Electronics On a chassis: $5, Diesel $10.
$5 of this this fee is waved for the MTH 1994 - mid 1995 production as the electronics is hardwired to the chassis.
This is a courtesy to those who do not wish to cut wires and splice them back later.
Remove/Replace shell: $5

Typical full service of an MTH loco is
$50 plus Return Shipping Requirements.

Typical full service of an After Market equipped loco is $65 plus Return Shipping Requirements.
