Neutral water sounds in steamers with progressive delay. Cab chatter in diesels with random selection and timing. Diesel Motor rev up threshold. PFA/FYA Lock-out Enable Brake Sounds
5) Additional features added to ProtoSounds(1) 1996 Requires 237 board Coupler Cab Chatter Diesel Low Idle Whistle/Horn In Neutral Brake/PFA Enabled Lockout Enabled
6) QSI OEMTM 1997 For those who want a very simple and straight forward, easy to operate sound system. Requires a Bell button to operate the bell. Used by 3rd-Rail and Weaver. Solid Diesel or Steamer sounds, Bell and Horn or Whistle. No CC. No Resets. Excellent for kids. Can be upgraded to QS2p when they are older. See: Sound Sets: Sound Sets: Available OEM Chips for sound sets and board requirements.
7) Works with 233 uP Board does not allow for upgrading to QS2p. See 237 below. Allegheny: Big mallet II: -404 Big 1: N&W J/FEF 4-6-4: -311 Big Max: Big Mallet I: -403 EMP1/EMD1 Has: -108 Horn, -106 Bell, and -101 Prime Mover

PRR N-1: -308
8) Requires 237 uP which allows for later upgrading to QS2p. Alco PA: -101 CFSM1: Articulated Has a "crying" whistle. Origin unknown. PRR N-1: -306 GE3: -111
9) Additional features added to get Proto Deluxe II 1997 Requires 237 board All features of Proto Plus, plus: Temporary
ID, Roadname ID, Engine type ID loco numbering. Overhead Blinking
Light. Demo mode. Operational Clear, Horn-Whistle/Bell settings. Chuff
Rate settings. Operates with all non-linear transformers.*
10) Additional features added to ProtoSounds(1) 1998 Requires 237 board Chuff/Diesel Motor threshold Diesel Motor Startup Diesel Motor shutdown Steamer Water Sounds in Neutral Diesel Warning Light (no choices) PFA and Squealing Brakes operation separated Flange Sounds Operates with all non-linear transformers.*
Note: Some features not in all years as suggested.
The following sections have been transplanted from the STR Service Flyer
11) New Features provided by QS-2P upgrades, 1997: for both After Market and ProtoSounds(1): Requires 237 board All of the features above plus: Diesel Motor Shutdown Sounds Squealing brakes and flange sounds as separate transformer controlled items. Automatic selection of transformer type. Operates with all non-linear transformers.* What this means is that it will function correctly with all new electronic transformers that produce the shark fin wave form at low voltages, which gives superior low speed control with good torque, noticeably better than plain sine wave. Engine Plus: Multiple loco selection (An option to using Train #). Transformer operated selectable dual coupler control. PFA Support (QSM). Start in forward option. Diesel Motor rev up threshold. Motor accelerates before loco moves. Neutral water sounds in steamers with progressive delay.
12) Additional Features provided by QS-3000 upgrades, 1999: for both After Market and ProtoSounds(1): All of the QS-2P features listed above, plus: Resets identified by Name & Number, no more click & clanks. Doppler Shift engine, Atmospheric Doppler. Coupler Slack Action, Coupler Crash. Expanded passenger Announcement, Emergency Stop Cord. Water filling, Fuel Loading, Lubrication, Loco Shutdown. Overall System volume adjusted by Transformer. Transformer adjustable brakes sounds threshold. Full TMCC compatibility with Train America UCUB. Steam Locos: Drift Chuff, Steam Cocks at Start-up, Water Scoop at high speed. Selected locos: Whistle at low speed, Horn at high speed. Diesel Engines: Turbo
13) Transformer Operated Coil Couplers, including Independently Controlled Dual Coil Couplers: With the QS-2P or the QS-3000 one can have independent transformer operation of two coil couplers that are on one loco. Diesels, steam switchers and dual tender locos can all benefit from this option. No more changing the coupler switch position on MTH locos!
Exceptions: 1) The non coil coupler equipped Sunset models 3rd Rail locos (except the S-2 Turbine) have an incompatible coupler mounting causing the coupler to swing either down or up as it moves side to side. The longer length of the QSI coupler amplifies this effect to the point where the coupler will drop or rise far enough to disengage the following car when negotiating tight curves.
2) Some locos have QSI's OEM sound system. Coupler rise or fall when swung from side to side needs to be check to determine compatibility. If compatible, have the OEM top board upgraded with a QS2p chip and add a single or dual coil coupler driver kit to accommodate a coil coupler(s).
14) For the MTH ProtoSounds1 equipped locos: Second coil coupler driver added to the ProtoSounds1 bottom board. Paragraph 4. Upgrade is installed in engineering defined locations on the board.
15) For all upgraded After Market (3 board) systems: All combinations
*Non-linear waveform transformers:
