Compatibility with Lionel and MTH Remote Control Systems
All
QS2p and QS-3000 Train Control Sound Systems are compatible with both
Lionel's TMCC & Legacy control systems, and with MTH's DCC control
system when these operating systems are set to conventional.
Older boards require upgrades to become compatible with TMCC & DCC "conventional" control.
MTH Sound Boards from 1994 to mid 1995, The QS2p upgrade also requires a board change. The discount for a returned 233 board is $25.See: Sound System Upgrades: MTH PS1 UpgradesMTH
Sound Boards produced between mid 1995 and 2000 are upgradeable to QS2p
by a chip change. This is both ProtoSounds1 and MTH After Market. See: Sound Sets: Sound Sets Family FeaturesAfter Market Sound Boards from 1991 to 1995 must be replaced. All later boards are upgradeable with a chip change. All QSI & MTH After
Market Power Supply boards must also be upgraded to properly operate
with these control systems, or other non-linear transformers.See: Sound System Upgrades, After Market UpgradesThe finest in Compatible Conventional control is The QS-3000 Train Control Sound BoardThere are 2 versions: 1) MTH ProtoSounds and 2) QSI, MTH & OEM After Market.See: QS-3000 are now AvailableAlmost all QS2p sound sets are available in QS-3000 form.See: Sound Sets: Sound Sets, QS2p & QS-3000 for the After Market series.Call STR for availability of the desired MTH sound set.

Upgrades make your loco more interesting to operate
The most reasonable one is the upgrade to QS2p, available for both After Market and ProtoSounds1 locos.
The 237 micro Processor is required, which is what over 90% of the sound systems sold are equipped with. These sound systems include: All of the MTH After Market products: Proto One, Proto Plus, Proto, Deluxe, and Proto Deluxe II. Most of the ProtoSounds1, starting in mid 1995. The subway and street cars sound sets are not available.
Almost all of the QSI OEM products. The triple chuff is the exception. It is when your sound system is at STR for repair is the most economical time for this upgrade, as the re-initialization for the scrambled memory becomes the QS2p chip's installation fee as part of restoring the sound board to operation.
The exception is when a sound board has a 233 micro Processor. It must be replaced.
The QS1, QS1.1, QS1.2 and QS2 all have the 233, along with the early ProtoSounds1 (1994 - mid 1995)
Any sound system can accept the QS-3000 upgrade. Most sound sets are available for both the After Market and ProtoSounds1 sound systems. Trade ins for a working 237 or a working 233 sound board are available.
Both the QS2p and the QS-3000 provide for independent transformer operated coil couplers, and multiple loco consists.
See Sound Sets, Sound Set Family Features for lots of additional upgrading info of After Market Sound Systems.

Enhancements of Power Supplies
ProtoSounds1: An enhancement is available to dramatically reduce the flash memory
scrambling that occurs with QSI designed Sound Boards when the battery
fails. The Protosounds1 power supply enhancement is for all MTH ProtoSounds1 bottom boards. See: QSI Sound System Repairs: Power Supply Updates
An optional update is available to enable one to safely operate the Protosounds1 sound systems with a good Ni-M-Hydrid battery or a BCR: $5. Note: This enhancement is not designed to protect against damage caused by a shorted battery, the condition of which would be dead, and operation unstable.
After Market and OEM PS-1 Power Supplies: 1) An
enhancement is available to dramatically reduce the burnout rate turn
that can occur with QSI After Market Sound Boards when powered with
electronic transformers or are operated with failing batteries.
2) The unused 6 connections between the Reverse unit's CMOS Analog logic and the micro Processor are removed, preventing any future CMOS failure from taking down the micro Processor.
The 2 After Market PS-1 enhancements are for After Market and OEM power supplies, $15 or $20 depending upon model.
It is STR policy to install these enhancements on all sound systems that come in for service. The goal is to promote customer satisfaction by extending the lifetime of these aging units.
The battery upgrade on the ProtoSounds1 is done only by customer request.
